The Building Inspection Department requires building permits for all commercial or residential construction or demolitions in the City of Coppell. All permit requests and fee information may be obtained online or from the Building Inspections Department located at 500 Southwestern Blvd., or by calling 972-304-3509, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Online Building Inspection Permit FormsBuilding Inspections application forms are available below in a downloadable PDF format. Permit Fees
Homebuilders PermitsBuilding permits are required to erect, enlarge, alter, remove, demolish, or repair a structure in the City of Coppell. This includes everything from fences and garages to commercial construction, signs and additions.
Mechanical PermitsMechanical permits are required for the replacement, repair or alteration of mechanical systems in structures, including gas lines, propane tanks, installation of sprinkler systems, and associated piping for flammable liquids.
Plumbing PermitsPlumbing permits are required for all plumbing work including water service, drains, water mains, sewage disposal systems, and related fixtures and appliances. When replacing a water heater, a building permit and an inspection is required by the Building Inspections Department.
Fences, Decks and Accessory Buildings PermitsA Building Permit is required for the construction of accessory buildings, decks, new fences or when changing the configuration of an existing fence.
1. Fences Two site plans or drawings, to scale, showing the location of the fence and any property easements, must be furnished for approval of the permit. A permit shall not be required to repair a fence or to replace 50-percent or less of the perimeter of an existing fence. However, in all cases where the fence location, height, or type of material is changing, a permit is required. Vinyl and polyvinyl fences are prohibited. 2. Decks and Accessory Buildings Two site plans or drawings, to scale, showing the location of the deck or accessory building and any property easements, must be furnished for approval of the permit. 3. Other Resident Construction Other types of residential construction, such as additions or remodeling, two complete sets of plans must be forwarded to the residential plans reviewer of the Building Inspections Department. Other information and documents may be required depending on the extent of the proposed work.
Concrete Flatwork and Driveway PermitsDriveway approach permits are required for the inspection, modification, or repair of new and existing driveways between the property line and the street. A permit is required prior to constructing, removing or replacing an existing residential driveway and apron, or related concrete flatwork.
Permits are also issued by the Engineering Department for all commercial aprons and work involving curb, gutters, storm drains, and parking lots. New residential driveway permits are issued as part of the building permit by the Building Inspections Department.
Permits for Pools and SpasA building permit is required for all above-ground, in-ground, and on-ground swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas containing water over 24 inches deep. A portable spa that simply plugs in does not require a permit. An electrical permit is required where grounding or additional circuits are installed.
In addition to the permit application, two site plans of the property, as well as two pool site plans with Oncor's stamp of approval must be submitted to the Building Inspections Department. The following pool inspections are required:
A temporary fence, at least 3 feet in height, must completely surround a swimming pool while it is under construction, and a permanent fence between 4 feet and 8 feet in height must be installed before the final pool inspection will be approved.
Demolition PermitsA building permit is required for all commercial or residential demolitions in the city of Coppell. Prior to obtaining the permit, a written release verifying disconnection must be received from each utility company that services that location.
