Mosquito Control Print E-mail

In an effort to control the presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Coppell, routine larvaciding is employed.  Larvacides are products used to kill immature mosquitoes.  They can be either biological (such as toxin from specific bacteria that is lethal to mosquito larvae but not to other organisms) or chemical products, such as insect growth regulators, surface films or organophosphates.  Larvacides are applied directly to water sources that hold mosquito eggs or larvae.

Mosquito trapping begins in the spring, and continues until mosquito activity decreases, typically early fall.  The trapped  mosquitoes are sent to the Texas Department of State Health Services laboratory where they are tested for the presence of West Nile Virus.  Spraying activity will begin when notification is received that there is a positive case of West Nile Virus.  The City of Coppell intends to keep citizens updated regarding the status of West Nile Virus activity in the area.  Surveillance of collected mosquitoes is conducted within the city to monitor for the presence of the virus.  If the virus is detected, increased control practices will be implemented in the area.

Citizens should avoid being bitten by mosquitoes if at all possible.  Only mosquitoes can transmit WNV to humans.  The disease is not transmitted from person to person.  While West Nile Virus can strike even the healthiest of humans, it can be easily prevented.

Remember the 4 Ds: DEET, Dress, Dusk & Dawn, and Drain.

  • Apply insect repellent that contains DEET.
  • Dress in long sleeves and pants.
  • Stay indoors at dusk and dawn.
  • Drain all stagnant water in your yard.

To assist the City of Coppell in controlling mosquitoes, the citizens of Coppell can help by using Source Reduction Strategies.  Work around your house to eliminate mosquito-breeding sites.
